Can You Be Suffering From Bipolar Depression?

February 12, 2009

Bipolar depression is a condition that routinely persists in the daily life of some individuals. Such depression is not what many of us feel on occasion, but are extreme and severe episodes that affect personal lives and work, and ability to function on a daily basis.

Feeling good or sad on occasion are parts of daily life for everyone, yet for someone diagnosed with bipolar depression, those ups and downs can cause such a severe disruption of activities that life may sometimes seem pointless.

Such episodes of bipolar depression cause sufferers to feel extremely sad and provoke periods of worthlessness, disinterest and unconcern about anything around them. Many people who suffer from this condition don’t even want to get out of bed or eat. This period of extreme disinterest may last days, or sometimes weeks, which is why it is so important to recognize its signs and symptoms. If left untended, many sufferers lose friends, their job, and many will starve themselves or even commit suicide.

However, recognizing the signs of bipolar depression is not easy. Since most people experience periods of ‘blues’ or malaise, victims, family and friends almost always assume that the person will ’snap out of it’ or feel better soon. For some, these feelings may be intermittent, which makes it even more difficult to recognize. For most, feeling ‘blue’ is also accompanied by a lack of interest in anything the person used to take pleasure in, including sex. One may also feel worthless or express lack of hope or faith in the future. Such persons may also experience a change in sleeping habits and weight.

This condition can strike any gender and at any age. Scientists believe that the condition is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, as well as hormone levels, and in recent years, doctors have observed a link between thyroid hormone levels and bipolar depression.

For some, bipolar depression causes the sufferer to doubt every decision and therefore leads to indecision in even the simplest matters, and such confusion and lack of ability to believe in oneself often leads to thoughts of despair and suicide. These periods of depression can last days, weeks or months. Many people suffer from bipolar depression and don’t even know it. Some accompanying symptoms can be eating disorders, phobias, and panic attacks that cause people to withdraw into isolation.

Many people suffering from bipolar depression want help, but don’t know whom to turn to when everything seems so pointless. Therefore, it’s up to family and friends to know when something is wrong and to encourage and seek help for their loved one.

Keeping track of mood swing frequency, duration and severity helps doctors to determine whether or not you or a loved one is suffering from the condition, but the recognition and desire to seek treatment must start with the family and friends of those suffering from the disease. Bipolar depression can be treated, but only early intervention will make life easier for both the patient and their families.

How do I know that a person is suffering from manic depression or, bipolar?
I have a classmate (female) who is bulling everybody from my class and some people who is older than her. At the first semester she was always crying in French class then, at the the second and third semester she beats me up for no reason and scares the s*** out of my classmates and friends. In my perspective she dosen't look normal and it is too impossible that she has a mental illness since all of us go to a private Roman Catholic College.

P.S. Some of my classmates and teachers tried to help her I think but, most of them either got beat up or had a nervous break-down

P.S.S?? How can I avoid her? Sometimes she stalks her victims…..and for protection I don't know any recreation centers that teaches karate or nin-jusu…….I have a social worker but, then she'd quit her job for no reason….the principal can't contact her parents because her father died from an unidentified illness and her mom is in the hospital due to an accident from a ski-doo trip….
She's not an orphan even before her mom's accident she was already abit crazy as described above…Her granfather takes care of her but some how dosen't listen to the principal or teachers.

first of all, why dou say that she cant have a mental illnes just becuase u atten a roman catholic college? it dosent matter, she may have one but maybe no one knows, and if she had a one i wouldnt blame her because of what she;s going through. that aint easy. and how come the teachers and principal dont do anything if ur in a roman catholic teachers? maybe u should talk to the teaches cuz it seems that the school is just ignoring all this.. of u ever get the chance to talk to this girl without getting beat, try to talk to her about her life. maybe she only wants someone to care

    good luck

It is not impossible for ANYONE to suffer a mental illness. She sounds very angry to me. The fact that you are at a Roman Catholic college has no bearing on her mental status. I think the only way you can know for sure what mental illness she has is by recording her behavior and consulting a psychologist.

If she threatens you physically or harms you, you should report it to the police. You will not be able to avoid her unless you leave the school or she does. I do not understand why no one has filed a police report against her or gotten a restraining order due to her physical violence.

first of all , being in a private roman catholic college doesnt mean that you can´t have a mental illness , it just means that people can be more close minded about it . it seems that this girl is going through a really rough time , maybe a depression and she´s taking it out on others . She might need some special attention but it seems like no one there can give it to her . i can understand why you´d be afraid to try to talk to her , but there is definitely something wrong . She needs some help ASAP , what you need to understand here ( not that it is any excuse) is that everything she has gone through is making her act like that now . You see , when people hurt others , it´s mostly out of ignorance or out of pain , not because they´re really mean , so the next time you feel afraid of her , try to remember this … and see if you can help her somehow , and if you can´t , just try to avoid her, because it´s not worth it if you can´t help her and you´re just getting yourself hurt in the process
