Home Remedies for the Treatment of Depression
Home Remedies for the Treatment of Depression
Depression is the most prevalent of all the emotional disorders. This may vary from feelings of slight sadness to utter misery and dejection. It brings together a variety of physical and psychological symptoms which together constitute a syndrome. Each year over 17 million American adults experience a period of clinical depression.
Depression is the most unpleasant experience a person can endure. It is far more difficult to cope with than a physical ailment. The growing complexities of modern life and the resultant crisis, as well as mental stress and strain in day to day living, usually leads to this disorder. It also arises out of the monotony and drudgery of a daily routine, without any meaningful variation in urban life. Suicide is the major risk in extreme cases of depression.
Impact of Depression:-
* Adversely affects the lives of families and friends.
* Disrupts the lives of millions of people.
* Reduces work productivity and absenteeism.
* Causes tremendous emotional pain.
What are the symptoms of depression ?
The symptoms of depression may vary from person to person, and also depend on the severity of the depression. Depression causes changes in thinking, feeling, behavior, and physical well-being.
It is not always easy to diagnose depression clinically. The most striking symptoms of depression are feelings of acute sense of loss and inexplicable sadness, loss of energy and loss of interest. The patient usually feels tired and lacks interest in the world around him. Sleep disturbance is frequent. Usually the patient wakes up depressed at 4 or 5 in the morning and is unable to return to sleep. Other disturbed sleep patterns are difficulty in getting off to sleep on going to bed at night, nightmares and repeated waking from midnight onwards.
Some of the common symptoms of depression includes :-
* A change in appetite causing weight loss or gain
* Sadness
* Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
* Difficulty concentrating
* Aches and pains (such as recurrent headaches)
* Difficulty making decisions
* Crying easily or crying for no reason
* Thoughts of death or suicide
Types of depression are :-
* Hypomania depression
* Agitated depression
* Cyclothymia depression
* Major Depression
* Dysthymic Disorder
* Neurasthenia depression
* Bipolar Disorder
* Manic Depressive Disorder
* Postpartum Depression
What are the causes of Depression ?
Depleted functioning of the adrenal glands is one of the main causes of mental depression. Irregular diet habits cause digestive problems and lead to the assimilation of fats.
The excessive and indiscriminate use of drugs also leads to faulty assimilation of vitamins and minerals by the body and ultimately causes depression. The use of aspirin leads to deficiencies of vitamin C and antacids can cause deficiencies of calcium and vitamin B. Diabetes, low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) and weakness of the liver resulting from the use of refined or processed foods, fried foods and an excessive intake of fats may also lead to depression

Can anyone suggest a homeopathic treatment for low-grade depression?
I think we all suffer small bouts of depression this time of year, but mine’s been more tenatious and has lasted longer than I would expect it to. I really don’t like the idea of medicating the pain away, so does anyone have any suggestions for an effective "home remedy"?

Do it through nutrition. Do not eat anything that is processed or filled with chemicals. No sodas. No sugar. No white flour.
Physically, get off of the computer and go outside. Go anywhere but stay at home or work.

I used to use St. John’s Wort. It worked really well for a long time, then I wound up getting Bipolar 2 with major depression, so I had to go on prescription meds.

if you really dont want to try standard pharmaceutical treatments, look for the brand Bach in your health food shop, they have a range of homeopathis treatments including their ‘rescue remedy’ which can be used to calm and lift your spirits. Be careful not to ignore the fact you may need medical treatment and/or counselling

Pamper yourself.(with food!) Your doctor won’t say "Drinking hot coca w/marshmellows while watching TV" will be heathly, but its nice. Don’t do this too much though. Plus excersize can be happiness-inducing! Have you every heard of a depressed athlete who’s sad —on the court?— This is because excersize releases (I forget wat) from your brain, and this (chemical) ups your mood!
BTW: stay warm, and sunlight helps. Sometimes the brain thinks "warmth and light" when in the sun, and sometimes may take this literally, by making yourself feel "happy and fun"

I remember reading an article about a study done with Saint John’s Wort, where they were comparing it to standard medications. In this study, they found that is was just as effective, with NO symptoms. The only people who dropped out because of symptoms were the ones taking a placebo…
Throughout history Saint Johns Wort has also been believed to drive away negativity and demons.
Personally, I take it for my SAD and it works wonders. Just take the standardized amount every day.
Of course, always look up the research on any new thing you are going to use, but I HIGHLY recommend Saint John’s Wort.

Log grade - medium grade - high grade. It doesn’t matter where you stand. Depression is in the mind, not in the body. Depression will effect your body but it starts in the mind. The home remedy is meditation. Learn to calm your mind, release the past stresses, get a new perspective, then go out and kick life in the butt.

You ask specifically for a homeopathic remedy for depression and there are quite a few, however, it would do you no service to name any of them. Depression is very individual as are the remedies - which act on the physical, mental and emotional levels - one or several will help you but you need a consultation with a qualified homeopath to find out which. Over the years I must have used over 20 remedies in curing patients suffering with depression.
