The Clinic For Emotional Wellness – Back To School
If you (or someone you know) are suffering from difficulties with sleep, anxiety, bullying, adjusting, fitting in, trauma, bereavement, or need a learning assessment, or psycho education assessment (to name just a few of lifeâs challenges), you need to know that you are not alone.
The World Health Organization defines health as âphysical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmityâ. Mental health is an enormous part of overall well-being and affects all aspects of the lives of us all, not just those dealing with these issues.
The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) states that scientific evidence has demonstrated a fundamental connection between mental and physical health. Forty three percent of adults suffer adverse health effects from stress, and 75-90 percent of all physician office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints. Stress is linked to the six leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide.
Also, according to the Canadian Psychological Association, âfor a variety of reasons, psychological services are increasingly being provided in the private sector. Psychologists are the largest provider of specialized mental health services in Canada. Public mental health services often donât exist or have terribly long waiting lists.â The lack of publicly supported services is a key reality that contributes to making mental health what is often called the âorphanâ of Canadian health care.
Health statistics indicate that: 20% of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime; 8% will experience a major depression; 1% will be diagnosed with schizophrenia; 12% will suffer mild to severe impairment as a result of an anxiety disorder; 4 out of 5 Ontarians have family, friends or colleagues who experience a mental illness in their lifetime.
In addition, when focusing on learning disabilities specifically, it is evident that they are staggeringly common. It is estimated that they affect one in 10 people, which means a typical classroom of 25 averages two to three kids with a learning disability. Kids with LDs have average to above-average IQâs, explains Judy Kerr, executive director of LDAC (The Learning Disabilities Association of Canada), although they are often mistakenly assumed to be intellectually limited.
Ms. Kerr points out that a professional assessment is necessary to determine whether and what kind of LD a child has. Although the cost of an assessment done privately can cost about $2,000 or more, this may be a small price to pay to avoid having a child wait up to two years for a publicly funded assessment. Help, which comes sooner than later, can make all the difference.
