qualification for counseling?

September 22, 2008

What qualifications do you need? i know that you need to deal with issues of your own before you can do counselling(of which i would need to do). I have a certificate for foundation in councelling skills and a certificate for a seminar i completed on Bereavement,Grief and Mourning but what other skills/qualifications would i need?. I am also an nvq2 carer and know how to deal with difficult behaviour.

This is not quite an answer however I thought I'd add my opinion. Although an education is a great thing it takes a certain sort of person to really be an effective counselor. But if a degree is what is needed I'm sure that you have the smarts to get one. Although it seems to me that you have excellent instincts and would do well in the counseling field. Peace&Love be with you…~M~

You most jobs or careers want you to have a degree or 2. Also most are looking for someone with experience for what they want to do. They way they carry themselves and also others close to them. They observe every detail about and want to know you. Just plain old you but you still have to be professional with it.

You need to determine the regulations for your city and state to set up a counseling practice. You also need to check to see what type of liability insurance you are going to have and what there requirements are for counseling. You also need to see if you want to be reimbursed from insurance companies and what there regulations state. Some states require licensure whereas others don't. Some require a masters degree in counseling and others don't. I'd suggest consulting an attorney prior to setting up practice.

A degree is the social sciences would help. But I believe that the greatest qualification you need to be a counselor is empathy, sympathy and the desire to help people. Understanding is something that you simply cannot learn in the class room. You can help people in many different arenas church, suicide hot lines, school, and so on with out a degree. But you must understand that there is a great deal of personal responsibility and grief that goes along with this type of work. Often people in this field internalize issues and feel like they can save the world. It's very difficult when things go wrong. Emotionally you can beat yourself up for years. I believe that if you truly have a calling to help people you should, just remember that you can't help everyone.

The most important qualification is the desire to be of help to those in need!
No letters after your name or certificate is required to give counseling to help others if that is your intention, unless that is your aim!
