Need help with counselling application?
i have to write a personal statement and I am not sure what to write. I pereviously did a post grad certificate but I always got low marks on the essays as I am not very academic and had been out of learning for nearly 30 years. In the personal statement it asks about my ability to cope with the academic demands of the course. Im not sure what the best thing to say would be. The thing is I know I would be more than capable as a proffessional counsellor as I volunteer as a bereavement counsellor, a befriender, advocacy and I work in the care sector. I always get good feedback in these helping relationships and would love the chance to move into proffessional therapy but I do not have a good enough track record with regards to my essays. The course is the postgraduate diploma in counselling studies.
first of all u sound more than capable of making it as a counsellor…this is just a small hurdle to get over.
in regards to your ability to cope with the demands of the course explain that because u find the whole area of counselling etc so interesting/intriguing you would relish the opportunity to broaden ur knowledge/experience of it (ie ur telling them u dont see all the academic stuff as a chore but more of an experience u are greatly loooking forward to)
if u could find a quote by a quote by a known psychologist (freud/maslow/carl jung) that applied to a point u were making in ur essay this might score u brownie points!
above all try and come accross as genuine and really interested in the whole area.
when u have it written if u would like me to have a look over it for u u can mail it to me at maria46622@yahoo.com as I received a 1st class honours degree in psychology
anyway best of luck with it!
you will do great!

Have you ever thought to ask someone in the profession.
When I need information about something and its hard to find I sometimes look for someone already working in the field and ask their advice.
This may be a long shot, I found this rather lovely website of a counselling professional. Maybe you'd like to read through her website and even e-mail to ask some questions.
In your personal statement you need to demonstrate your interest and your ability to benefit from the course. It is always a good idea to have a clear vision for your future and to show that you have thought about the course and your future. I would even go so far as to say how I planned to practice in the future.
